Depth adjacency and the Ponzo illusion

چکیده

The effect of depth displacement of test bars from the induction wedge of the Ponzo illusion was investigated in two experiments. Either two wedges of opposite orientation were presented simultaneously, one at a near and the other at a far distance, or only one wedge was presented at either the near or the far distance. The test bars were stereoscopically either in the plane of the wedge or displaced from the wedge in distance. When the two wedges were presented simultaneously, the direction of the Ponzo illusion was determined by the wedge at the same perceived distance as the test bars. When onlyone wedge was present, stereoscopic displacement of the bars in front of, but not behind, the wedge decreased the magnitude of the illusion. The results are interpreted in terms of the adjacency principle.

The Ponzo illusion with auditory substitution of vision in sighted and early-blind subjects.

We tested the effects of using a prosthesis for substitution of vision with audition (PSVA) on sensitivity to the Ponzo illusion. The effects of visual experience on the susceptibility to this illusion were also assessed. In one experiment, both early-blind and blindfolded sighted volunteers used the PSVA to explore several variants of the Ponzo illusion as well as control stimuli. No effects o...

The Ponzo illusion and the perception of orientation

Illusions have long been considered to provide insights into normal visual processing. Thus Richard Gregory asked, “Can it be that illusions arise from informationprocessing mechanisms that under normal circumstances make the visible world easier to comprehend?” (Gregory, 1968, p. 66). A critical issue has been which normal information-processing mechanisms are reflected by specific illusions. ...

The working memory Ponzo illusion: Involuntary integration of visuospatial information stored in visual working memory.

Visual working memory (VWM) has been traditionally viewed as a mental structure subsequent to visual perception that stores the final output of perceptual processing. However, VWM has recently been emphasized as a critical component of online perception, providing storage for the intermediate perceptual representations produced during visual processing. This interactive view holds the core assu...

Effect of hypnotic age regression on the magnitude of the Ponzo illusion: a replication.

A 1969 study by Parrish, Lundy, and Leibowitz which investigated the effect of hypnotic age regression on the magnitude of the Ponzo and Poggendorff illusions was partially replicated. In the present study, the Ponzo illusion was presented to eight college students under three conditions (waking, regressed to age 9, and regressed to age 5). Results indicated no significant difference in the mag...

Illusory Distance Modulates Perceived Size of Afterimage despite the Disappearance of Depth Cues

It is known that the perceived size of an afterimage is modulated by the perceived distance between the observer and the depth plane on which the afterimage is projected (Emmert's law). Illusions like Ponzo demonstrate that illusory distance induced by depth cues can also affect the perceived size of an object. In this study, we report that the illusory distance not only modulates the perceived...
